THEY SAY KNOWLEDGE changes you. That once you know the truth, you can’t return to ignorance. But I would call it innocence.

The day I changed, I was loading dirty clothes into the washing machine. Laysen, my roommate and best friend, had just walked through the door, out of breath and excited about something.

It wasn’t every day she came home from work excited. But that day, she had. She found me in the laundry room and handed me a flier for a special gala hosted by our local historical society.

I gazed at the beautiful piece of beige parchment paper with black ink that looked to have been hand-scribed. At first glance, it contained the historical society’s logo.

Only there was something off about it. Something I couldn’t place.

I didn’t tell her. I just eyed the flier carefully and then eyed her as I wondered why she hadn’t noticed the error. She was the history buff, not me.

“Elyse, we have to go to this,” Laysen said, her eyes wide and bright.

I stared at the flier again and said, “The gala is in two hours. That’s not enough time to get ready. And it’s a forty-minute train ride from here.”

She leaned forward and grasped my hands, shaking them gently. “This is an opportunity of a lifetime. We can’t miss it.” Her voice was higher pitched than normal.

Fighting hard not to smile at my roommate’s infectious attitude and bizarre behavior, I cocked my head and narrowed my eyes. “What has come over you? You’re acting strangely.”

“I have a feeling deep in my gut that this is an event we must attend.” She shook my hands again and added, “We have to go together. I can’t go to the gala by myself.”

“Layse, this is crazy,” I said, arguing. “You know that, right?”

She lifted one shoulder in a half-shrug. “Say you’ll go.”

I sighed, relenting. “Fine. All right. I’ll go.”

As she squealed, she released my hands and then jumped up and down. “We’re going to have so much fun.” She whirled on her heel and hurried out into the hallway. Then she called over her shoulder, “Get ready. There’s plenty of time.”

I groaned as I dumped the rest of the dirty clothes into the machine and then set the basket on the dryer. Laundry would have to wait.
